Recently, biochar as a new soil conditioner and adsorbent has become a hot spot concerned in agriculture, environment, energy and other fields. Biochar is produced by organic matter pyrolysis in absence of oxygen. Different raw materials and production conditions will produce biochar properties. Biochar can improve soil fertility, bulk density, total porosity and water retention, and also can adjust soil pH, enhance soil cation exchange capacity (CEC), improve soil nutrients. This paper summarized biochar producing method, its physical and chemical properties and its effect on soil physical and chemical properties, thus provided theoretical support to optimize biochar, upgrade the added value of it products, and promote the soil improvement.

Maize is one of most important cereal crops in China. Although conventional maize breeding has made a great contribution to increasing maize production, it has not fully satisfied the demand of elite hybrids. With the development of biotechnology, molecular breeding has become an important direction in maize breeding. In this paper, the backgrounds of molecular breeding, major research areas, the types of transgenic maize, and molecular marker techniques were briefly summarized, The mapping results of QTL associated with grain yield, agronomic, qualitative, biotic, and abiotic tolerance traits were reviewed as well as their applications. The concepts of association analysis and functional markers, and strategies of developing functional markers based on comparative genetics and bio-information were also introduced.

ABC (ATP-Binding Cassette) transporters constitute the largest protein family with the most variety of functions. Most of them are involved in transporting many kinds of substrates in living organisms. Because they are closely related to some important biological processes, such as multidrug resistance (MDR) and etc, ABC transporters have attracted more and more researchers' attention. ABC transporters are most abundant in Arabidopsis and rice among current sequenced organisms, leading to the hypothesis that plant ABC transporters largely contribute to membrane transport of endogenous secondary metabolites in the plants. Plants produce a large number of secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, terpenoids and phenols, which can protect plants from being harmed by biotic and abiotic stresses. The accumulation and secretion of these metabolites are highly regulated and ABC transporters play a significant role in the process. In this review, we summarize the related background information and the advances of plant ABC transporters involving in the accumulation and the transmembrane transport of plant secondary metabolites.

The environment has been under great pressure as a consequence of the livestock waste discharged in the course of intensive production of livestock and poultry farming. By studying the elemental theory of respiratory metabolism, comprised of small molecule acid metabolism of Geobacter sulfurreducens, the aerobic and anaerobic metabolism of Shewanella oneidensis, as well as extracellular electron transfer directly contacted and mediated by electrically conductive pili and electron shuttle substances, the central carbon metabolism pathway, basic extracellular electron transport process and main regulatory mechanisms of model electroactive microorganisms were examined. Owing to insights into the respiration and metabolism of electroactive bacteria, a variety of microbial electrochemical systems (MES) mainly based on microbial fuel cell, microbial electrolytic cell and electric-field-assisted aerobic compost had been developed and optimized. Not only MES were employed to reduce contents of hazardous substances including chemical oxygen demand, greenhouse gases, antibiotics and resistance genes, but they were also used to improve power generation efficiency, cathode high value-added products and humus contents of compost. The research progress of microbial electrochemical theory and thoroughly demonstrates the application of microbial electrochemical technology in the recycling of livestock and poultry waste were reviewed, so as to provide reference and theoretical foundation for the study of livestock waste utilization.

There are two different protein degradation patterns in vivo, one pattern is energy-dependent and another is energy-independent. Ubiquitin/26S proteasome pathway (UPP) is an exceedingly high-efficient, specific and ATP-dependent route for protein removal. In eukaryote, ubiquitin/26S proteasome pathway is involved in 80%~85% protein degradation. In plant species, the ubiquitin/26S proteasome pathway regulates fundamental processes of growth and development, and it is one of the most important and fine regulation mechanisms for protein efficient and specific degradation in plants. This paper summarized the ubiquitin/26S proteasome pathway, and emphasized on the protein structure of E2 and E3 and their biological function and mechanism in rice growth and development, hormone signaling, biotic and abiotic stress response. The paper also prospected the further study, which would be helpful for revealing the fine control process of ubiquitin/26S proteasome pathway during rice growth and development, thus to provide guidance and reference for rice stress resistance breeding.

The literature from CNKI and Web of Science about farmland protection was analyzed from the aspects of paper quantity, literature source, author distribution and citation condition to determine the theme and hot topic of farmland protection studies at home and abroad, including ecological security and biodiversity, etc.. Results indicated that there were remarkable differences in paper quantity for farmland protection at home and abroad. Its changing features were affected obviously by policy environment and social cognition. In terms of literature quality, the impact factors and H index of Chinese literature of farmland protection were lower than that of the abroad ones, so the Chinese literature quality was relatively poorer and further improvement was necessary. In terms of author distribution, it was mainly concentrated in Europe, Asia(China) and North America. In terms of literature contents, farmland ecological protection was the global research hot topic. In terms of research direction, from global vision farmland protection involved broad area. Compared to western developed countries, Chinese research orientation combined natural science with social science.

Ubiquitin/26S proteasome system (UPS) is an essential pathway of protein ubiquitination. As a post-translational modification process, UPS plays an important role in all crop growth and development stages. Many studies have shown that ubiquitin receptor protein,  E3 ubiquitin ligase, and deubiquitinase in UPS could coordinate with each other. By connecting or removing different amounts of ubiquitin on the target protein, they could mediate the degradation of the target protein, change the subcellular localization and protein activity and regulate the seed size. This paper reviewed the research progress of ubiquitin/26S proteasome system regulating seed size in different crops. Its future development was prospected to provide a reference for the study of seed size regulation mechanism and breeding improvement.

Plants collectively produce more than 200 000 organic chemicals (molecular weight <1 000), which exhibit diverse physiological functions during the life cycle of plants. Thus, plant metabolomics now plays a fundamental role in plant biology and applied biotechnology. The association analysis of metabolomics and transcriptomics data (or other omics data) is a powerful tool for elucidating the function of genes involved in plant metabolic network. In recent years, plant metabolomics exhibits new potentials to new research fields such as fluxome and cofactome analysis. We briefly discussed the current status and the applications of metabolomics as a plant functional genomics and system biology tool in this review, which was expected to provide a referance for understanding and studing meatbolomics.

Real-time quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) technology, with quantitative accuracy, high sensitivity and high-throughput characteristics, has been widely used in gene expression analysis. Based on the relative quantitative analysis, qRT-PCR data must be normalized with one or more proper and stable internal reference genes. House-keeping genes are customarily used as endogenous references for relative quantification. But not a single gene can act as a universal reference reported so far. Most of the traditional housekeeping genes are unable to ensure accurate normalization in qRT-PCR. Based on the tremendous gene-chip expression data and public deposited EST data, new reference genes with superior stability were selected and verified with qRT-PCR. The research progress of reference genes in plant qRT-PCR was reviewed and aspects to be considered in future reference gene selection were also discussed.
